Ogi has today deployed Nokia’s next generation 25G Passive Optical Network (PON) fibre technology onto its Cardiff network, bringing 25 Gigabits per second connectivity to the city’s tech incubator, Tramshed Tech.

In the first commercial deployment of its kind in the UK, engineers at Ogi have upgraded the tech hub’s ecosystem with the latest technology from the Finnish telecoms giant, more than doubling the bandwidth capabilities for business users at the site.

The first symmetrical solution of its kind on the market, Nokia’s 25G PON enables operators to boost fibre broadband capabilities as demand for capacity increases, simply with the addition of new optical card into the fibre nodes in their fibre exchange and new fibre modems at the customer end of the network. No new fibre needs to be laid.

Ogi’s Chief Technology and Operations Officer, Justin Leese, said: “We talk a lot about our network – and full fibre – being future ready, and today we’re able to demonstrate this claim by installing Nokia’s latest technology on our network.”

“As demand for speed and resilience increases – particularly in places like Cardiff – so too does the need for our network capabilities to pivot and flex. Full fibre provides the opportunity to upgrade connectivity without the need to re-dig roads and, in its simplest form, upgrades are managed by switching out the technology at either end of the network.

“This is a significant step forward for business in Wales.”

Billed as a key component in accelerating connectivity as demand grows 25G PON makes it possible for an operator to support premium business services, gigabit residential broadband, and some 5G mobile transport capabilities – all on the same fibre infrastructure.

Speaking about the deployment, Chief Executive Officer UK and Ireland at Nokia, Phil Siveter, said: “We are proud to have been selected by Ogi as one of the first UK deployments of our 25G PON technology, demonstrating the flexibility and capacity of our market leading fixed access solutions in delivering these leading and innovative UK services”

Tramshed Tech’s Chief Technology Officer, Cai Gwinnutt, said: “This is an exciting moment for us here at Tramshed Tech. Deploying the next generation technology today means even greater possibilities for businesses based in our innovation hub. As more and more of us demand faster, more reliable connectivity, this new technology from Nokia, deployed by Welsh broadband company Ogi, is helping us – and our community – remain one step ahead.

“Enabling this technology is great news for the innovative business we serve, and even better news for the future of connectivity here in Wales.”

After successful tests in operator labs globally, this is the first time the technology has been deployed in a live environment here in the UK, with some of Wales’s best-known start-up companies among the first to benefit from this next generation ultrafast and ultrareliable technology.
