Ogi enabling the ‘gigaboom’ for a future-proof Wales

Almost five thousand homes in south Wales now have access to ultra-fast broadband from Ogi

    • Wales catching up as home nations increase gigabit access
    • New real-fibre broadband network to reach 150,000 homes
    • Ogi offer current broadband speeds from 150 to 900 Mbps

Thursday 11 November, 2021. Cardiff, Wales. Ogi, Wales’ fastest-growing broadband company, is one of the first in south Wales to be able to offer customers a gigabit-capable broadband service, and just four months after starting work to build the fibre-optic network, 4565 households can now access the service. These ultrafast speeds are more than twenty times the Welsh average, and underpin incredible opportunities for residents and businesses alike.

Data from the UK government shows 58.38% of UK premises are able to access gigabit-capable broadband, but only 44.78% of homes in Wales. Slower speeds don’t just mean glitchy video calls with nain, buffering videos and missing out on sell-out tickets, but it represents a real economic disadvantage.

The Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Lee Waters MS, said “The importance of fast reliable broadband has become even more apparent.  While this area is not devolved to Wales we are taking action to bring faster broadband speeds and better mobile connectivity to all parts of Wales. Broadband is a key utility and we’ll continue to support all efforts to boost connections the length and breadth of Wales.”

As the Ogi real-fibre broadband network continues to expand, more and more homes in Wales will be able to access ultra-fast, future-proofed broadband. .

Ben Allwright, CEO of Ogi said, “Gigabit broadband is the future, and we’re building it here and now for Wales. From the outset, we knew we wanted to continue to protect and reassure our customers. The next few years are going to be transformative for Wales, and the UK as a whole, and at Ogi, we wanted to make sure that those who have been underserved for years didn’t fall any further behind.”

Ogi’s is already servicing areas such as Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, Abergavenny in Monmouthshire and Rhoose and Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, and the service will be passing new areas soon. Residents and businesses in these areas have simply not been getting the broadband they deserve, and Ogi has been working to provide these underserved areas with a new, and reliable full fibre service, which the company estimates will bring an estimated £6million of investment to each build area.
